Why Tesla owners protect

Four things every Tesla owner learns in the first 5,000 miles.

1. Tesla paint is softer than comparable-tier brands. Tesla owner forums (TeslaMotorsClub, r/TeslaModel3, r/TeslaModelY) have catalogued this for years. The factory clear coat is thin and reveals chips and micro-swirls faster than BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche at the same mileage. This isn't speculation — it's the #1 paint-related owner-community discussion thread.

2. Teslas are delivered with paint defects. Sanding marks from the factory line, swirls from the delivery center wash, light overspray, and the occasional buff mark. We correct delivery defects as part of every Tesla protection install — standard practice.

3. Ceramic tint measurably improves summer range. LuxeGuard Pro HD blocks up to 99% of infrared heat. On a 95°F Charleston day, the AC compressor works noticeably less — owner-community road tests have shown 3–7% range improvement in hot weather with full ceramic tint.

4. Protection boosts resale value. Tesla buyers (especially on the used Model S / X and Cybertruck market) actively search for protected vehicles. PPF and ceramic transfer with the VIN — CARFAX, CarMax, and private buyers all factor it into price. Typical return on Full Front PPF + OP-5 ceramic at resale: 60–80% of original install cost.

Tesla Model Y in Midnight Silver Metallic, three-quarter front view
Tesla
Model Y

The best-selling EV in America — and the most-protected one in our bay.

Model Y paint is the softest in the Tesla lineup per owner-community consensus. Highway rock chips on the front bumper and hood start showing within the first 5,000 miles, and Model Y front-end delivery defects (sanding marks, light swirls from the factory wash) are the #1 correction job we do before ceramic coating.

Recommended for this Tesla
  • OP-5 or OP-7 ceramic coating (5- or 7-year registered warranty — the tiers most owners choose)
  • Full Front LuxeGuard PPF — hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors

  • Optional add-on: lower door panel PPF (protects rockers + lower door sections)
  • LuxeGuard Pro HD ceramic tint — all glass (sides, back glass, windshield, and panoramic roof)
  • Windshield protection film — rock-chip guard for the big, low-riding glass
  • Door edge guards — PPF strips that keep paint from chipping when a door opens into a wall or adjacent car
  • Touchscreen protector — anti-glare, anti-scratch film on the Tesla center screen

Frequently asked

Tesla-specific answers.

Does Tesla recommend PPF and ceramic coating?

Tesla doesn't officially recommend specific aftermarket products, but Tesla owner communities (TeslaMotorsClub forum, r/TeslaModel3, r/TeslaModelY, r/Cybertruck) widely acknowledge Tesla paint is softer than comparable-tier German or Japanese paint. PPF and ceramic coating aren't optional upgrades on a Tesla — they're the standard protection package Tesla owners add within the first 30 days of delivery.

When should I get my Tesla protected — right at delivery or after break-in?

Right at delivery. Tesla paint can take light chips within the first 500 miles on Charleston-area highways. We recommend scheduling the install within the first 1–2 weeks of ownership, after you've had time to inspect the car and file any delivery-defect claims with Tesla. We handle correction of delivery defects as part of the package.

Will tint affect my Tesla's range?

Measurably, yes — in hot climates. Ceramic tint on side windows and the panoramic glass roof reduces cabin temperature, which reduces AC load, which improves driving range in summer. Multiple Tesla owner dyno/road tests have shown 3–7% range improvement in 90°F+ conditions with full ceramic tint vs factory glass. LuxeGuard Pro HD blocks up to 99% of infrared heat — the actual heat-producing spectrum.

Does the windshield tint affect FSD / Autopilot cameras?

No — if installed correctly. The Tesla forward-facing cameras are mounted above the rearview mirror in a housing that's designed to see through a narrow view slot. Our software plots the windshield film with a proper cutout for the camera housing before we cut anything, so the film is sized to skip the camera area. Done right, zero FSD / Autopilot interference. Done wrong (installers without Tesla-specific software or experience), coverage over the camera can trigger FSD warnings.

Do you have Tesla-specific PPF and tint templates?

Yes. We use advanced software paired with a film plotter to cut vehicle-specific PPF panels on-demand — bumpers, hoods, mirrors, door handles, rockers, and windshield tint are all plotted and cut to your exact Tesla model before any film touches your paint. Zero razor blade work on the vehicle. Software + plotter + experience is how clean edges happen.

What is windshield protection film and why do you recommend it for Teslas?

Windshield protection film (WPF) is a clear impact-resistant film — similar to PPF but engineered for glass — that absorbs rock-chip impact so your windshield doesn't. We recommend it on every Tesla for two reasons: (1) Teslas sit lower to the ground than most vehicles, so rocks kicked up by cars ahead strike the windshield at a worse angle, and (2) Tesla windshields are large and expensive to replace — $1,500–$3,000+ on Model 3/Y, significantly more on Model X and Cybertruck. A WPF install at quote-time pricing usually pays for itself after the first chip you don't have to insurance-claim.

Can you protect a Cybertruck?

Yes. Cybertruck protection is a different strategy because the body is stainless steel, not painted metal. We ceramic-seal the stainless (makes bird droppings, hard water, and construction dust wipe off without etching), PPF-protect the painted trim + door handles + wheel arches, and install Pro HD tint on side windows, rear glass, and the oversized windshield. We've done multiple Cybertruck packages and have the Cybertruck-specific install files in our software.

How long does a full Tesla Protection install take?

Essential: 3–5 days. Premium: 6–8 days. Ultimate: 1–1.5 weeks. Full Body: 1.5–2 weeks depending on coverage. We keep the car in our climate-controlled bay the entire time — no driveway installs, no dust exposure. We can provide a loaner or coordinate with Uber for drop-off and pickup.

What's the warranty on a Tesla Protection Package?

Each component carries its own manufacturer warranty: PPF 10 years (VIN-registered), ceramic coating 3–9 years depending on tier, tint lifetime. The warranty transfers to a second owner when you sell the car, which is a measurable resale-value boost — Tesla buyers pay more for protected cars, and CARFAX / CarMax / private buyers all factor it in.

How much does a Tesla Protection Package cost?

Pricing varies by Tesla model, color, and the specific combination of ceramic / PPF / tint you want. We build the package to match your vehicle rather than forcing you into a fixed SKU — so instead of a fixed price list we give you a firm, itemized quote within 24 hours of a 20-minute walk-through. The 'combinations' on this page (Essential / Premium / Ultimate / Full Body) are starting points; your final package will be tailored to your Tesla.

Can I insurance-claim the cost of PPF or ceramic?

Not typically as a direct claim, but PPF and ceramic coating do affect insurance in two ways: some insurers offer diminishing-value protection riders for higher-end Teslas (Model S / X) that factor in protective coatings, and if a rock-chip event damages only the PPF, the PPF is replaceable without a paint claim. Talk to your insurer — especially if you're insuring a Plaid or Cybertruck.
